Official opening of SVETOVID-19 laboratory
In the premises of the FMSUKG Institute on June 14, 2023. "Svetovid 19" laboratory was officially opened. This laboratory was established as the result of the SVETOVID-19 project "Genetic epigenetic determinants of predisposition to the severity and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans". The project lasts for three years and is financed by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia. The funds for the laboratory were mostly provided by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, and the space and the renovation itself were financed by the Faculty of Medical Sciences. For our conditions, this is a very large project and the focus is on the research of genetic determinants, that is, genetic characteristics in the general population in response to infection with the corona virus. We are looking for answers to what are the determinants that influence the fact that one person gets the corona virus with a mild clinical picture and another has a severe clinical picture or a fatal outcome. Within the project, we examine a large number of genes that influence the immune response and the outcome of infection, and as a result of our work so far, we have published an excellent paper in a top virology journal,'' said the head of the laboratory, prof. Dr. Dejan Baskić and added that work on the project continues in the new, state-of-the-art equipped laboratory.
Dean prof. Dr. Vladimir Jakovljević mentioned that the opening of the new laboratory is another fantastic result of the faculty in the field of scientific and research work and added that he is sure that the results will be applicable in clinical practice, above all in the post-covid era that we have. "This is one of the few projects that was approved and financed by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia. For all our researchers who pass the Fund's very strict selection process and receive a project, FMN will provide them with all the available resources to realize that project at full capacity," said Dean Jakovljević. In addition to Dean Jakovljević, the official opening was attended by the rector of the University of Kragujevac, Prof. Dr. Nenad Filipović with colleagues, all team members as well as other colleagues and employees of the FMSUKG.
